Samsung Display has yet to decide whether or not it should invest in manufacturing equipment for Gen 8.5 (2,200 x 2,500mm) OLED panels. The company is negotiating with Japan's Ulvac for Gen 8.5 OLED deposition equipment and could reach a final decision regarding its Gen 8.5 OLED plans next month.

Ulvac offers Gen 8.5 OLED equipment that deposits organic substrates vertically. The company demands between 700 billion and 800 billion won ($548-$616 million) per manufacturing unit, while Samsung is reportedly looking to pay around 400 billion won ($308 million) per unit. (via The Elec)

Samsung Display's gearing up to make OLED iPads possible

Ulvac has the industry's first Gen 8.5 OLED manufacturing machine that deposits material vertically. Because the technology is new and relatively untested, industry watchers expect Samsung to also partner with Japan's Canon Tokki to acquire a Gen 8.5 half-cut OLED machine that deposits material horizontally.

Samsung Display aims to become an Apple supplier for future iPads that will adopt OLED display technology. If negotiations end well, the Korean tech giant could be ready to mass-produce Gen 8.5 OLED panels for Apple iPads in 2024.

The company may also want to use its future Gen 8.5 OLED production line to supply Apple with large panels for iMacs. However, since negotiations for equipment are still ongoing, Samsung Display's role in Apple's OLED plans remains subject to change. Previous reports claimed that Samsung Display could purchase Gen 8.5 OLED equipment nex year.
