Market watchers expected Samsung to strike a deal with LG Display for the latter company's W-OLED TV panels. A survey from earlier this year estimated that Samsung Electronics could end up buying around 2 million W-OLED TV panels from LG Display in 2022, but more recent reports say otherwise.

Although Samsung and LG seemed like they were about to reach an understanding earlier this year, it turns out that Samsung may have to skip releasing its first W-OLED TV in 2022.

New industry reports (via The Elec) now suggest that the possibility of Samsung acquiring W-OLED panels from LG this year has become slim.

Negotiations for W-OLED panels reportedly began last year. The global TV landscape has changed ever since negotiations started, and Samsung is apparently more reluctant than ever to rush into releasing TVs based on W-OLED technology.

Samsung and LG may be discussing W-OLED for 2023

Industry experts say the global smart TV market should decline in 2022 compared to last year due to several factors, including the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and the COVID outbreak in China.

These weren't factors when negotiations between Samsung and LG first began. However, Samsung now has to reestimate demand for 2022, and W-OLED is apparently not a priority.

The good news for Samsung fans is that Samsung's QD-OLED technology is seemingly superior to LG's W-OLED anyway. Based on early tests, Samsung's QD-OLED panel is brighter and more color-accurate than W-OLED.

Nevertheless, Samsung and LG could continue negotiations around W-OLED, and recent reports even suggest that the two Korean tech giants could end up collaborating on developing the next generation of W-OLED panels in 2023.
