Samsung has seemingly set a new trend because Google has just detailed a similar service for Pixel smartphone customers in partnership with the same DIY repair platform, iFixit.
Google will launch its new repair service at an unspecified date “later this year” for the Pixel 2 and up. Similar to Samsung customers, Pixel users will be able to purchase individual parts or iFixit Fix Kits that come with tools included.
And like Samsung, Google's explanation as to why this repair program is a good idea has to do with its sustainability and recycling efforts.
Credit where credit is due. Even though Samsung was the first to market with this idea, the Korean tech giant has so far limited its reach to the USA. Meanwhile, Google is launching its service in the United States and the UK, Canada, Australia, and European markets that have the Pixel line on sale through the Google Store.
Hopefully, Samsung will be up to the challenge and expand upon its partnership with iFixit to offer its DIY service outside the USA.
