Galaxy S22 ‘Bridgerton’ skit brought up something I’ve tried hard to forget

The last in-person Unpacked event was held in San Francisco back in February 2020. The world shut down soon after that and Samsung has only done virtual launch events since then. Things can get a bit boring so one can't fault Samsung for trying something different.

However, the short ‘Bridgerton' skit that Samsung had played out before the Galaxy S22 series was officially unveiled brought back memories of a rather cringe-worthy Samsung launch event that I, like many others, have tried hard to forget.

For those who may not be aware, Bridgerton is a Netflix original series set in Regency-era Britain, one where a lot of creative liberty has been taken. What could that have possibly to do with Samsung's new flagship phones?

The skit plays out the scene of an “inventor's ball” where new innovations are presented to the queen. First up is Lord Mackintosh, we all get the reference here, who fails spectacularly in his demonstration of a raincoat.

Like many viewers, at this point I found myself thinking about where this is all going. Lo and behold, Lord Tristar enters with portraits of the Galaxy S22 series and follows them up with superfluous descriptions of the device's capabilities. By the way, Tristar is another play on symbolism, as some of you might be aware that Samsung in Korean hanja means three stars.

So while the skit ends on the note that the handset won't arrive until 209 years in the future, it brought back memories of Samsung's Unpacked event for the Galaxy S4 in 2013 held at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

It was a Broadway musical-themed launch event complete with performances and jokes that fell so flat you wanted to run out of the venue as fast as possible. If you think this skit was cringe-worthy, you've got to check that event out.

There's no harm in trying something new. Thankfully, this Bridgerton skit wasn't as much of a pain to sit through. If anything, it just brought up the PTUD (post-traumatic Unpacked discomfort).
