Right now, one has to manually select the HD option every time they want to share photos and videos with others. But that could soon change, as it has been discovered that WhatsApp is developing a feature that will allow users to share higher-quality versions of photos and videos by default, as can be seen in the screenshot below.
This will be a notable step up for the media-sharing experience on WhatsApp, though there's no telling when the feature will make its way to the app. New features are usually added to the beta version of WhatsApp before they arrive on the stable version, but the option to set the default media upload quality is not yet ready for public testing.
It also remains to be seen if WhatsApp will ever allow sending photos and videos in their original quality. The HD quality setting only increases the resolution and quality compared to the standard quality setting, and at the moment, the only way to send photos and videos in the original quality is to share them as documents.
