Samsung has been the leader in the DRAM and NAND flash storage segment for decades, and the company is trying to solidify its leadership with even more research and development. The company has reportedly established a research and development team for SSD in India.

According to a new report from Seoul Economic Daily, Samsung Electronics has established a dedicated research and development team in India for SSD technologies. Samsung Semiconductor India Research has reportedly formed a new team under the Memory Solutions Team, which is responsible for optimizing the performance and power efficiency of SSDs. The company wants to leverage local talent in India to expand its technological leadership in the SSD segment.

Samsung has collaborated with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Kurnool, and Roorkee for closer collaboration with students and researchers. It also set up the Samsung Innovation Campus at the KLE Institute of Technology (KLEIT) in Hubli and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU).

The demand for DRAM and NAND flash chips has been relatively low for over a year after the COVID-19 pandemic, and Samsung has suffered losses due to this fall in demand. However, the market is recovering, and memory prices have risen steadily over the past few months. The South Korean firm wants to capitalize on this recovery and improve its technological prowess to secure its future.

Samsung's official document reportedly revealed that it had a 35% share of the global NAND flash chip market in 2022. And that is only expected to increase, as there has been a boom in AI and autonomous driving in recent years. These applications need a lot of fast storage to access data. Samsung also makes HBM (High Bandwidth Memory), which is increasingly used in AI processing. According to a report from Omdia, the global SSD market will cross the $16 billion mark in 2023 and $38 billion in 2027.
