Samsung is currently showcasing several new display technologies at the CES 2024 expo. Its new QD-OLED panels meant for TVs and monitors are brighter, while its laptop OLED screens are thinner than ever. The company also unveiled several foldable, rollable, slideable, and hybrid OLED screens for automobiles, phones, tablets, laptops, and more. In addition, it has unveiled a new type of micro display, called OLEDoS, that is meant to be used in XR headsets.

This OLEDoS panel will likely be used in Samsung's upcoming XR headset that could launch later this year.

Samsung's OLEDoS screen has 3,500ppi pixel density

Samsung Display unveiled its first OLEDoS (Organic Light Emitting Diode on Silicon) screen. Apparently, it is also the world's first OLEDoS screen with an RGB sub-pixel structure. It is a 1.03-inch square screen that is created by applying organic materials on a silicon wafer. It has an unbelievably high pixel density of 3,500ppi, and that is comparable to viewing a 4K screen when wearing an XR/VR headset.

Samsung says that it doesn't need a separate light source, so visuals will be true to life. While the company hasn't revealed what frame rates the display can be driven at, it is possible that it supports up to 90Hz, which should offer smooth visuals. Two such screens could be used in Samsung's upcoming XR headset. This screen is created by eMagin, a US-based OLEDoS display manufacturing firm that Samsung Display acquired a few months ago. This firm makes helmets and night vision goggles for military use, and they use the company's OLEDoS panel.

Author's Note: While Samsung Display hasn't revealed many technical aspects of its first OLEDoS screen, the 1.03-inch panel could have a resolution of 2,500 x 2,500 pixels, and it could support a refresh rate of up to 90Hz. We expect the same panel to be used in Samsung's upcoming XR headset that will potentially use Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor and a version of Android designed by Google for XR headsets. Apple's Vision Pro headset also uses a curved Micro OLED screen from Sony with a similar resolution and a refresh rate of 96Hz. However, Apple could switch to Samsung Display's panel in the future.
