The Galaxy Z Fold 5 didn't turn as many heads as the Z Flip 5 because of its almost unchanged design and hardware specs that sounded too familiar from last year. But as we found out through using the device leading to our Galaxy Z Fold 5 video review, Samsung's new foldable flagship phone is more than meets the eye.

We broke our video review into three sections: Design, Cameras, and Software. And across the board, Samsung has brought meaningful upgrades this year. Admittedly, the camera hardware hasn't seen any hardware upgrades, but Samsung made up for it through better software optimization and AI. And Flex Mode is as great to use as ever.

    Story continues after the video

The Galaxy Z Fold 5's refreshed design truly makes a difference

At first, the issue with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 was that it looked too much like the Galaxy Z Fold 4. But that's not inherently a bad thing. We already know from the Galaxy S22 and S23 lineups that a design refinement can lead to a better experience than a design overhaul.

Samsung took what it learned and made the Galaxy Z Fold 5 lighter and thinner. It's the thinnest foldable phone the company ever manufactured. And to top it all off, Samsung gave the Z Fold 5 a new gapless hinge.

It may not be obvious from renders and videos, but these design tweaks noticeably improve the user experience. The work Samsung has done in this area is worthy of a sequel.

And finally, Samsung made multitasking even more convenient on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 through One UI 5.1.1. Multi-window and Pop-up view are easier to use, and the upgraded taskbar speeds things up considerably, as users can switch between recent apps with one tap of the screen.
