The short answer is yet, particularly if you're holding on to the Galaxy Z Flip 3. There are significant improvements in this model that make it a no-brainer to upgrade from the 2021 model. Here are just a few of them.
There may not be a lot of room to play around with as far as the design is concerned on clamshell foldables, but Samsung has done a good job of making it appear more sleek and modern on the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
When compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, it's a considerable upgrade, when you look at them side by side. The new device is a bit more sharper, has less curves, and overall exudes a more elevated vibe.
Samsung's clamshell foldable was long overdue for a larger cover display and the company has followed through with the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The latest model has a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED 60Hz cover display which is also called the Flex Window.
You can get so much done through the Flex Window. There's support for multiple widgets, a full QWERTY keyboard for sending texts, apps optimized for the cover display, and more. If you're upgrading from the Galaxy Z Flip 3, this alone is reason enough to take the plunge.
Even though the sensors have the same 12-megapixel resolution, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a larger primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture. This enables the sensor to capture more light and thus deliver sharper images. It even has support for Optical Image Stabilization so your shots won't come out as blurry.
Samsung has also equipped the device with new camera software features, including but not limited to Nightography, that significantly improves the quality of low-light images. You're also getting FlexCam, a feature that lets you make full use of the unique form factor to take pictures even though third-party apps.
Compared to the 5nm Snapdragon 888 on the Galaxy Z Flip 3, the latest device features the current flagship chipset, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. This means you'll enjoy a noticeable improvement in the performance, both when multi-tasking and playing games.
It's also going to be more power efficient so your battery is going to last much longer. The 2021 model doesn't have a 512GB storage option but the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is available with 256GB and 512GB storage, alongside 8GB of RAM.
The form factor's major limitation is that a massive battery can't be incorporated, but Samsung has made improvements every year. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 ships with a larger 3,700mAh battery, a considerable increase over the 3,300mAh battery found in the Galaxy Z Flip 3.
This, coupled with the efficiency improvements delivered by the hardware, will ensure that your battery anxiety is going to much lower with the new device. There's also support for 25W fast charging compared to 15W on the 2021 model.
There's no chance of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 outshining the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The latest model is a proper revolutionary upgrade over the 2021 model, which itself was a major upgrade. Samsung follows this cycle every two years which is precisely why the Galaxy Z Flip 3 owners are the perfect upgrade candidates for this device.
If you're the kind of person who changes their phone once every two years, it's highly recommended that you go ahead and buy the Galaxy Z Flip 5. You won't be disappointed.
You can pre-order the Galaxy Z Flip 5 from Samsung.com starting today for $999. Shipments begin August 11, 2023.
