Samsung launched its second-generation QD-OLED TVs—S90C and S95C—earlier this year. A few days ago, it was reported that the company signed a historic deal with LG Display to buy WRGB OLED panels from the company. This would mean that Samsung would have access to more OLED panels and sizes. However, this could lead to some confusion among buyers.

Samsung's existing OLED TVs use QD-OLED panels from Samsung Display. However, the OLED panels that the company is buying from LG Display are WRGB OLED panels. Both panels use different underlying technologies. As far as we've seen, QD-OLED panels perform slightly better than WRGB OLED panels in terms of color accuracy, color volume, and brightness.

Samsung could launch WRGB OLED TV with the same model number as its existing QD-OLED TV

Recently, Samsung applied for certification (via Vincent Teoh if HDTV Test) of its upcoming OLED TV with model name KQ83SC90A with the NRRA (National Radio Research Agency) in South Korea. The model number and information present in the certification reveals that it is an 83-inch OLED TV. It is the same model number as Samsung's existing S90C QD-OLED TV (SC90A in South Korea). So, it is possible that Samsung plans to launch WRGB OLED TVs with the same model number as its existing QD-OLED TV.

If Samsung goes ahead with this plan, it is possible that people will have to face an OLED panel lottery, as no one can be sure if they've received a TV with a QD-OLED panel or a WRGB OLED panel. While it makes sense for Samsung not to differentiate between the two TV panels as it would divert attention from its Neo QLED (Mini LED) TVs. However, it would be bad for buyers as not every consumer will get the same quality.

The Galaxy experience can be messy for first-time users

Some say it's always better to have more options, but it's never as clear-cut as it sounds. This design philosophy doesn't always work, and more importantly, it isn't a magical shortcut that can patch everything up and always lead to a better user experience. On the contrary, if not handled properly, I believe the “more […]

Samsung has launched a more affordable OLED TV—S85D—in the US. It sits below the S90D and uses LG Display's WRGB OLED panel rather than Samsung Display's QD-OLED panel.
