Samsung has been actively engaging in initiatives aimed at safeguarding water bodies and rehabilitating ocean ecosystems to combat the pressing issue of water contamination, which poses a grave threat to humanity and the planet's ecological balance, the Korea Times has reported.

The South Korean technology company is commemorating the UN's World Water Day (March 22) by taking measures to address the challenges of worldwide water scarcity and pollution. Furthermore, the organization is promoting awareness concerning the importance of water among its workforce.

Samsung celebrated World Water Day by organizing a collaborative effort amongst employees at its Suwon, Gumi, and Gwangju campuses in South Korea to maintain the cleanliness of nearby rivers and prevent pollutants from damaging the ecosystem. Moreover, aligning with this year's World Water Day theme, ‘Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible,' its manufacturing centers across the globe undertook numerous water conservation activities.

In the preceding year, nearly 110,000 Samsung staff members across 20 offshore production sites actively engaged in World Water Day endeavors, from roadways and riverbank cleanliness drives to resource preservation initiative contests, photography showcases, and eco-awareness educational modules.

Samsung's efforts for a clean ocean

The tech giant actively promotes the sustenance of marine ecosystems by implementing efficient measures to curtail plastic waste in the oceans. One of the company's spearhead initiatives includes incorporating recycled plastics, derived from discarded fishing nets, in their Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S23 series, PCs, tablets, and more. By the end of the current year, the company's goal is to help prevent more than 15 tons of these nets from polluting the world's oceans.

Also, Samsung Display is actively engaged in mitigating the environmental impacts of its products. An example of such commitment is the reduction of power consumption for its TV and monitors and integrating recycled plastics. Notably, the company has been progressively applying recycled plastic in various product lines, including the rear covers of monitors, since 2022. This move not only fosters a circular economy but also plays a part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
