Apple is planning to launch the first MacBook with an OLED display by the end of 2024, reports Apple analyst Ming Chi-Kuo. Considering that Apple sources OLED panels for all its products from Samsung, it is very likely that the iPhone maker could knock on Samsung’s door for the MacBook’s OLED display as well.

According to Kuo, an OLED panel would allow Apple to reduce the thickness of the display lid, and therefore, the weight of the MacBook. While he hasn’t shed light on which model of the MacBook would get the OLED display, analyst Ross Young had recently claimed that it would be the MacBook Air.

Currently, all MacBooks feature an LCD display panel, either with a traditional backlight or the more advanced mini-LED technology, which offers better brightness and contrast ratio. An OLED display would push the contrast ratio on MacBooks even further. However, an OLED display typically has lower brightness than an LCD.

At the moment, only two products from Apple — iPhone and Watch — use OLED displays, and Samsung supplies OLED panels for both of them. Considering that Samsung supplies OLED panels for all Apple products using this technology, it is highly likely that it could get to supply OLED panels for MacBooks as well.

However, while Samsung might get orders from Apple to supply OLED panels for the upcoming MacBook, the South Korean tech giant might not get to supply as many OLEDs for the Apple Watch as it does now as Apple is planning to equip the next-generation Watch Ultra with a Micro LED display.
