[Poll Results] Are you using navigation gestures on One UI (Android Pie)?

Samsung switched to software navigation keys with the Galaxy S8 and has launched every new device since then with software keys instead of the traditional hard home button and capacitive back and recents keys. Not everyone liked the change, but it’s a change that’s here to stay. However, Samsung did introduce a neat solution for those who weren’t happy with the software keys taking up the screen in the form of navigation gestures.

Navigation gestures were introduced in Android Oreo with some devices and it is a standard feature of Samsung’s One UI skin found in Android Pie. The gestures permanently hide the software keys and users can simply swipe up from the bottom of the screen to perform the home, back, and recent apps actions. It’s an ingenious solution that allows you to use more of the screen for your apps, and Samsung also lets you quickly switch between gestures and standard navigation keys with a quick toggle.

And those navigation gestures are what our latest poll is about. Do you use navigation gestures since you updated to Android Pie on your Galaxy smartphone? If yes, do you use them all the time or do you switch to regular navigation keys from time to time? Let us know by voting in the poll below, then get a discussion going in the comments!

Results: Navigation gestures seem to be very popular, with 66 percent of voters saying they use gestures all the time. Not too surprising, considering Galaxy fans had long been supporters of Samsung’s hardware buttons, so getting the software keys out of the way for increased screen estate is a nice option to have. 18 percent voters never use gestures, while 12 percent of voters say they sometimes switch back to the standard navigation keys. 4 percent weren’t aware of the gestures but say they will use it going further.

I loved it. Maybe the reason is that I bought s9 1 week ago and before it I was using A3(2017). So I`m freshman in navigation bars and gestures. I love that there is no buttons on my screen. I hated all android phones for buttons on the screen and loved that Samsung wasnt using them (until 2017). And now i dont have any buttons on screen again))

I would love to keep my screen free of the ugly and uncustomisable navigation bar (too big, mostly light background, rarely able to be an overlay). Oreo’s option to hide it and display with one single gesture was great – I wish it hadn’t been REPLACED with the navigation gestures, I don’t see why it couldn’t be an additional, third option. Because Pie’s navigation gestures are an incredibly awkward and lame solution to a problem that did not exist. When I tried, half the time I ended up opening the app drawer (when I didn’t want it; when I actually… Read more »

Let the Android 9 Pie update arrive then I will let you know.

It has been 23 days of January and Samsung still has not pushed the update to S9/S9+ phones in Saudi Arabia!!

What? The S9 and S9 plus Pie software update went OTA two weeks ago in Saudi Arabia . It’s there also on Smartswitch. You should check your software update settings. You must be the only one who hasn’t got it. My colleague in Saudi got it two weeks ago. The firmware is also available here on Sammobile.

I disabled the navigation buttons using Fluid Navigation and ADB and I am using their gestures as well. Swiping on the edge to go back is so addictive and feels more natural than swiping from the bottom to go back.
On Oreo, there were some issues with apps going full screen, especially native apps, but now since the UI on pie supports swipe navigation and full screens, I am taking full advantage of the Fluid Navigation app.

I dont’ like it. It is also bugged. Look at this video:

You need to use gesture twice to get it working.
This happens only when you run app using home button hold gesture.
