December 2017 security patch detailed by Samsung

Home / News / December 2017 security patch detailed by Samsung

Samsung has published details on the security patch for the month for December on its official blog today, revealing what vulnerabilities have gotten fixed in Android and the exploits patched in Samsung’s version of the operating system. There are a total of 10 vulnerabilities affecting Samsung devices that have been fixed in the latest patch, along with 11 critical vulnerabilities found in Android (in addition to a slew of moderate and high-risk ones).

As usual, there’s nothing here that would interest us regular folks (compared to the last couple of months where major exploits like KRACK and Bluetooth were discovered), other than the fact that the software running on Samsung’s Android devices will be more secure. Well, at least those that will receive the December update on time, something that cannot be guaranteed even for the company’s top-of-the-line handsets if we go by recent security patch updates. It also remains to be seen which device will be first in line. The Galaxy S8 and Note 8 don’t seem to be at the top of the list despite being the latest and greatest Samsung flagships, so we can expect older, even lower-cost phones to be updated before flagship phones.

When am I getting the update?

Once the December security patch starts rolling out to a Galaxy device, you’ll read about it right here on SamMobile, so be sure to keep checking back! If you’re interested in the details of the security exploits in the December patch, check out the source link.

This is the kinda crap that makes me consider getting an iPhone. Long Sammy user (owned S3, S6 and now S8), but between these bullcrap update delays and friends busting my balls every day to switch to Apple, for the first time I began to consider it.

Have you tried iOS 11 since the beginning? There is always something wrong with it. Had to upgrade every time new version was released. I’m going to hold out on iOS 12 when it gets released. I still regret not staying on iOS10 on the 7+

You know the latest live build from iOS makes the phone reload the screen every 30 seconds! LOL
go on youtube and EverythingApplePro channel, its on there.
Samsung may be slow but I’ll take slow over whatever it is Apple is doing – not only that but they CONSTANTLY have iOS in Beta.

Today samsung released the zto updade. The only update was the CSC. All the rom remains the same. Including security patch still from august. Where is the respect from samsung with customers? Shame.

Thank you for keeping us updated. It’s a shame what Samsung is doing this year with its flagships, to be honest. We were supposed to have the best support and sadly I’m seeing how a Galaxy a5 receives security patch before my s8…

Probably I won’t repeat on Samsung when the time of updating my devices arrives…
So disappointed :S

They do a phenomenal job. Galaxies are the only Android devices certified by the nsa, and other alphabet agencies across the globe. Updates on galaxies follow much more rigid guidelines than other Android devices that are a free for all. Galaxies have Knox so stock vulnerabilities are more difficult. The proactive security buys the time needed so that even with more thoroughly tested updates galaxies are still the most secure devices on the globe. Stock Android based devices are just sitting ducks that only have security patches to rely on. Only s series galaxies are certified which is why lower… Read more »

Its not actually, but raises a very relevant point. Since the S6s their phones have been Government certified for secure use. Not many phones have that status, and I don’t think Knox has ever been compromised yet, and as a long running Samsung user, you should know by now that they are slow with updates.

Samsung can’t keep going on hiking prices while at the same time not improving the quality of their software support. Something’s got to give.
