Samsung won’t update the first-generation Galaxy Tab S to Marshmallow

If you’re the proud owner of an 8.4- or 10.5-inch first-generation Galaxy Tab S, you may want to listen up as we have some rather unfortunate news for you. Yesterday evening, Samsung Mobile Netherlands took to its official Facebook page to reveal that the firm will not distribute the long-awaited Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to either model of the slate in Europe.

Unfortunately, it’s currently unclear why the Galaxy Tab S won’t be receiving the upgrade. After all, it was recently spotted in a benchmark test running Android 6.0.1, and a reliable industry insider even confirmed exclusively to us that the firmware was scheduled to start rolling out in the third quarter. All we can do is speculate that the manufacturer ran into some serious issues while adapting the software for use on the device.

WTF! Tab S 10.5 and Tab S 8.4 has the sharpest screens of all tablets in the world! Amoled and super high-res. Light and good battery also.
Why the **** are they abandoning these great tablets that still beats new tablets that are released 2 years later than this one???

I doubt anyone from Samsung reads these comments, but on the off chance that they do, your lack of commitment to supporting your products defies belief. I have a Galaxy Tab S 10.5 and a Galaxy S5 LTE-A that I bought at the same time. Whereas the S5 has finally got its Marshmallow update (and is much faster as a result) I can’t understand why Samsung wouldn’t extend the same update cycle to what was their flagship tablet at the time. My Galaxy Tab S is beginning to slow down, which having seen a speed increase since the S5 was… Read more »

You can’t blame this on the Phone Carriers either, as its all Samsungs doing.

… whahhhhhh… cry on people, good God. You want free updates and upgrades the rest of your life? Buy a new car. Buy a sofa. Buy a house. NO, WAIT, what am I saying. You don’t get free lifetime back-ups with those things either. If you can’t handle a device that you’ve bragged about on and on and on longer than 2 years with no other update, then why brag about your crap then? Don’t buy it in the first place. 99% of you wangerbabies never keep your crap long enough to be worried about all this anyway. You’re always… Read more »

One thing is life time another is giving just 1 major. I got the tab pro 8.4. It also never got a major update. NEVER buy Samsung tablets, they get zero support.

I guess you are what they call a “fanboy”. Blindly following and agreeing with what, in this case, Samsung is doing. In case you didnt notice all people here “crying” as you put it own the Tab S (2 years old), which is not the latest tablet on the market, so your rather naive comment that we all here go for the latest to brag fails terribly. Some comprehensive reading would at its place here.

Try again.

Omaha4K

never said it was the “latest on the market”, kid. Fail, fanboy? wow, you use such original phases, you’re so cool! Move on, Captain ‘Merca.. (oh, and you left out “hater” too. I’m a hater. I’m evil. Jeez, forgot, I’m a huge troll as well. Yeah, huge. A troll, that’s me)

Alta1r

True, you never said Tab S was the latest on the market, but you came in here accusing everyone that vented their frustrations about that tablet not getting its promised upgrades (2 years from release) that we all go for the latest and greatest and then go bragging about it. Even though i don’t understand at all what bragging has anything to do with this article (I guess you are frustrated as well but you chose the wrong article to vent it), but didn’t you put two and two together and could have made the assumption that since everyone in… Read more »

The Tab s 10.5 is my first and my last Samsung tablet, I own at the moment both the Tab S 10.5 tablet, and Galaxy S6, and owned several other Samsung devices s3, s4 and s5 in the past. But since I bought the s6 that I has considering to move away from Samsung and android, I always was a fan of android devices and Samsung but lately I was serious considering the move to apple ecosystem, when I buy a high end device, I expect at least the latest updates for a period of two years, more than that… Read more »

The Tab s 8.4 is my second Samsung tablet along with a number of Samsung phones. I have been looking at replacing my Nexus 5 with a Galaxy S7 or Note 7 but I think this has finally convinced me to move away from Samsung

Hello All,

The Tablet S is a very nice device. I enjoyed using it very much until today.
A long wait for Marshmallow did not seem like a big problem to me.
If this device will not get anymore updates security wise or Marshmallow, this will be my last Samsung device I have ever bought.
Hope the next Nexus tablet will be a big succes… (and not a samsung).

regards Jip

Same here, I’m done with Samsung. I own at the moment both Tab S tablets, Note 3, Note 5 and Galaxy S6, and owned several other Samsung devices in the past. But seeing their update policy from the past years (MM very late on Note5 and S6 and very little support for Tab S) I will try other brands from now on. Samsung has to realise that it is not enough that the products work, people want the latest firmware and security patches as well, especially within the 2 years from when the product was released. Before they could have… Read more »

Unfortunately other Android OEMs are just as bad or worse, apart from Nexus. And Nexus hardware ranges from terrible (Nexus 9) to mediocre.

Alta1r

True, but at least you’re not paying the full premium price that comes with Samsung products now. At least the price difference would make up for the lousy support (for me anyway).

Yeah, it’s a valid point. Premium prices should come with premium support.

Droitwichgas

Future tablet buyers would be mad to pay top prices for a Samsung tablet when it’s only likely to receive one OS update plus limited security updates. A Nexus or iPad at least get regular updates for 2 or more years, or just get a cheapo throwaway Android tablet and replace it annually.

I’ve had an amazing marshmallow custom rom on my tab s for months, it’s super fast, bloat free and has a small footprint. This in turn allows adoptive storage so you won’t run out of space. It’s easy to do, give it a go!

That’s why I won’t buy Samsung Devices anymore.
Now I understand why Apple fans love their devices so much.
Thank you Samsung for guiding me what I should buy and I shouldn’t.

KYS2012

No matter what, Apple fans will love their devices even if it’s shit. Tab S in Lollipop is still very much more functional than its latest iOS variants.

Droitwichgas

But no recent security updates and the iPad will still be getting updates in 1 or 2.

KYS2012
KYS2012

Even iPad got the latest update it still not as functional as an Android tablet. My iPad is never as good as my Tab in terms of features and functions. By choosing an iPad because of software update is simply a bad choice. Apart from the number pump, there is no real improvement of anything.

WP00
WP00

Was actually not surprised to hear this. I was more surprised to hear the initial news that it was being updated at all.

Anyway, no one outside Google updates their tablets for 2 gens in a row, only luck I’ve had so far is with LG’s OG G Padm but even that the Lollipop update never officially rolled out and I had to flash Korean firmware onto it,

Well, Samsung just seems to disappoint at almost every turn lately. Kind of reminds me of my top of the line Dell laptop that is only 3 years old and was neither qualified or is supported under Windows 10. Might just have to save my money, go back to throw away devices and call it a day.
