New dimensions confirm that Galaxy Tab S2 will be Samsung’s thinnest tablet ever

About two months ago, we reported that Samsung’s next-generation high-end tablet, the Galaxy Tab S2, will be thinner than the Apple iPad Air. A lot of changes can happen when the devices are under development, and it looks like Samsung has made some changes to the frame of its upcoming high-end tablet.

According to a tweet from @OnLeaks, the Galaxy Tab S2’s dimensions will be around 237.17 x 169.58 x 5.5 mm, which is quite similar to what we reported earlier (237.1×168.8×5.4,). These dimensions are for the variant with a 9.7-inch display, and it is possible that Samsung may have made some changes to the metal frame of the device. Also, the tablet’s design is inspired by the Galaxy S6, but we are not sure if it will feature a glass back.

Based on the information that we have till now, the Galaxy Tab S2 will come in two screen variants – 8.0-inch and 9.7-inch – with a squarish aspect ratio of 4:3, just like the recently released Galaxy Tab A. It will most probably feature metal build, 64-bit Exynos 7 series processor, and Android 5.0 Lollipop. We will keep you updated on the matter as and when we get more information about this device.

3:2 is perfect ratio considering system bar. I have used Nook.
But 4:3 is also good for reading and web browsing in portrait mode.
Watching movie with translation subtitle is not bad in landscape mode.
16:10 wide ratio is suitable for big tablet(12 inch) and laptop computer.

Very disappointing that Samsung is going 4:3 with their tablets. I mainly use my TabS to watch TV shows and movies on the go (and read the occasional comic)… so a 4:3 screen would be terrible for me. It seems like Samsung is trying to be Apple now more than ever. If I wanted 4:3, I’d get an iPad.

There are many valid reasons to abandon 16:10 other than following Apple.

It’s Google that gave up and moved to 4:3, so app maker move there app content over. I.e. nexus 9 is 4:3 and this is the new setup by google

A Glass Back on something that big…that would be a disaster. I got my S6 online last night and the first thing I did was order a decal to stick at the back, the glass might look cool and might even add to the structures strength but that thing is going to be a fingerpint magnet. Having a device that big with glass front and back is going to drive most of us batty buffing out all the smudges. I’m not sure we need the device to be the thinnest ever, we need better battery life, we are coming at… Read more »

As long as the media continues with its obsession with “premium look!” and “thinnest thingy evar!!!” don’t expect things to change.

Tabs should be built like the Galaxy A series phones. All metal, no crappy glass bs, THIN as hell. Even thinner than the S6 phones.

I have the Galaxy A7 and its SUPER thin. So thin, but it even has enough room for the SD card. Quality built phone. Wish it had MORE features like the S series. (heart rate monitor, finger print sensor, etc etc).

The Galaxy A series should have better specs. It should outsell the S series.

“we are not sure if it will feature a glass back.”

I surely hope not!

The 8.4S is only slightly bigger than the 7.7 (I had both for a while)

The S2 is the wrong shape, the 4:3 aspect ratio means that it wont fit in a suit or jacket pocket. Also crap for movies.

All tablets are crap for movies. At least being 4:3 it will be decent for reading and web browsing.

You’ve never tried a 12.2″ Note Pro, have you? 2K, 12.2″…. PERFECT for films.

We simply have different expectations. I like to watch movies on a big screen, no tablet is ever going to provide a decent experience compared to that, no matter how big or widescreen it is. Designing a tablet for a use case that never is going to be any good anyway is a silly idea in my opinion (and the huge success of the iPad kinda proves my point). For the occasional TV episode and Youtube, 4:3 works just fine.
