How to reboot the Galaxy S6 when it hangs

The previous flagships from Samsung’s Galaxy S series all have removable batteries, so if a device hanged all you needed to do was pull the battery and restart the device. It’s not as easy on the Galaxy S6 given its metal and glass construction, and the fact its battery is actually glued to the frame and buried underneath various components. So what do you do if you have to reboot the Galaxy S6 when it hangs?

Fear not, there are a couple of ways to reboot the Galaxy S6 when it freezes for no apparent reason. The first is a simple one that has been a part of competing phones with non-removable batteries for a long time – you can simply press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to force it to restart (just like you would hold down the power button on a PC to force it to power down.)

If that fails, you can use a simple three-button combination. Press and hold the volume down, home and power/lock buttons until you come to a Warning screen as shown in the image below. Here you can press the volume down key to restart the phone. In case you were wondering, this trick works for the Galaxy S6 edge as well.

You were so close, it’s actually volume down and power. It’s in the manual (like anyone bothers to read those anymore).

A what? What on Earth is this “manual” you speak of? I have never heard of such a contraption.

I think holding the power button for 10 seconds does the trick as well. At least it restarts my Galaxy S and Note phones no matter what happened (except they don’t want to turn on 🙂 ).

That is not always the case, as our S6 did not respond to that.. It only responded to the 3 button combo.

Why would it hang??? They better work on making it stable and hang-free than give us a way to reboot it if it freezes.

Because every device in this world freezes. I have worked on mainframe to enterprise class devices worth millions, and every damn device freezes once in a while. It is impossible to build a device without any flaw. There will be bugs, guaranteed.

Nine times out of ten, system instability issues causing hung threads and crashes are caused by software developed by external parties. If you consider the level of Android device fragmentation, i.e. the ever expanding number of makes/models, then it is an absolutely amazing how they manage to dynamically adjust for different models, touch panel displays and form factors. iO on the other hand (which is not immune to crashes and hung threads) have major complications when they change the dimensions on the screen. Remember when the iphone 5, featuring a larger display height, hit the market. if you ran an… Read more »
