Galaxy Tab A9

Introduction

The Galaxy Tab A9 is one of Samsung's most affordable 2023 tablets, one aimed at customers who aren't willing to purchase costlier tablets like the flagship Galaxy Tab S9 or the Galaxy Tab S9 FE launched in the same year. It's not meant to impress with its spec sheet but is designed to offer a good mix of features for entertainment and getting a little work done on a budget.

Design

The Galaxy Tab A9's design is as generic as it comes, with the display taking up most of the front side and the back being completely plain except for a single camera in the corner. The Galaxy Tab A9 has a metal build, a rarity in its price segment, but it doesn't have any IP rating for water or dust resistance. The tablet does come in attractive colors, however: navy blue, graphite, and silver.

Display and cameras

The Galaxy Tab A9 comes with an uncommon display size of 8.7 inches. It's an LCD panel with a refresh rate of 60Hz and a resolution of 1340×800 pixels. The display tech is as humble as it gets, as one would expect for a tablet that is priced lower than $200. For audio, the Tab A9 is equipped with stereo speakers that support Dolby Atmos surround sound.

The camera setup is a simple one, with an 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 2-megapixel camera on the front. The tablet can record videos at a resolution of 1920×1080 (Full HD) and a frame rate of 30 fps.

Specifications

The Galaxy Tab A9 is powered by a MediaTek chip, the Helio G99. It is an octa-core chip with two performance cores clocked at 2.2GHz, six efficiency cores clocked at 2.0GHz, and the Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. There is the option of 4GB and 8GB of RAM, with 64GB and 128GB storage respectively. MicroSD expansion can increase storage by 1TB.

Connectivity features on the Galaxy Tab A9 include the usual suspects, such as Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.3, all comon GPS technologies, a USB-C 2.0 port, and a 3.5mm headphone port. The tablet comes in Wi-Fi and LTE flavors. It has a 5,100 mAh battery under the hood, with support for 15W fast charging.

Software and features

Android 13 and One UI 5.1.1 come preloaded on the Galaxy Tab A9. This is a bare-bones version of the Samsung software experience found on more expensive Galaxy phones and tablets, and as such it lacks features like Samsung DeX. It is guaranteed at least two major Android OS upgrades.

Availability and price

The Galaxy Tab A9 went on sale globally on October 23, 2023. Prices vary by market, but it is available for an equivalent of $150 or thereabout in most countries for the Wi-Fi variant and $180 for the LTE variant.
