Emergency location sharing is a safety feature that automatically transmits your phone's precise location data to emergency services when you make an emergency call. This system uses GPS, cellular towers, and Wi-Fi networks to pinpoint your exact position and send it directly to 911 dispatchers or emergency operators.
The feature activates only during genuine emergencies, such as when you dial an emergency number like 911. Your phone temporarily overrides normal privacy settings to share location data that could save your life. This includes your exact coordinates, which emergency responders use to dispatch help to your location even if you're unable to provide an address.
Modern smartphones, including Samsung devices, have this capability built into their operating systems. The technology works independently of your regular location settings, meaning it can function even when you've turned off location services for apps and other features.
Samsung phones use Enhanced 911 (E911) technology that combines multiple location sources to provide the most accurate position data possible during emergency calls. When you dial 911, your Galaxy device immediately activates GPS, scans nearby cellular towers, and identifies connected Wi-Fi networks to triangulate your location.
The system works through your phone's built-in emergency location service, which operates at the network level. This means the location data travels directly through your cellular carrier to emergency services, bypassing regular internet connections. Your Samsung device calculates your position using satellite signals when available, but it can also rely on cell tower triangulation in areas with poor GPS reception.

After the emergency ends, the shared location data is handled according to emergency services' record-keeping policies. Different regions have varying requirements for how long emergency call records are maintained, but the data remains restricted to official emergency-response purposes.
Emergency location sharing is enabled by default on Samsung phones and cannot be completely disabled due to legal requirements in most countries. However, you can review and adjust related settings through your device's location services menu in the Settings app.
To check your emergency location settings, open Settings, tap Location, then look for Emergency Location Service or Google Emergency Location Service. This shows you the current status of emergency location features on your Samsung device. While you cannot turn off emergency sharing for 911 calls, you can manage related features like location history and app permissions.
Some Samsung devices allow you to customize Emergency SOS settings, including whether the feature activates when you press the power button multiple times. You can find these options in Settings under Safety and emergency or Advanced features, depending on your Galaxy model and software version.
