The concept is not entirely new, as a similar online competition through TikTok was launched by Samsung Australia in partnership with Amplify earlier this summer.
This time, however, Samsung is teaming up with Billboard and is inviting music artists in the USA to create and share a 60-second cover song of “Out Out” by Joel Corry & Jax Jones, featuring Charli XCX and Saweetie, and share it on TikTok along with the hashtag #BillboardNXT.
Billboard will select twelve contestants to participate in various challenges and showcase their creativity and live performance skills over the course of several weeks. The challenge videos will be captured with the Galaxy Z Flip 3.
Billboard will rank the contestants weekly on a custom chart, and the Top 3 performing artists will advance to compete in the Grand Finale, which will be livestreamed at Billboard.com.
Each of the three finalists will be mentored and prepared for the finals by a celebrity. The first Billboard NXT mentor is Charli XCX; the other two mentors will be revealed at a later date.
Charli XCX recently collaborated with Samsung for the development of the Galaxy Buds 2. Specifically, the artist was brought in as an expert to assist in the calibration of the bass boost and fine-tuned equalizer.
Anyway, back to Billboard NXT, the event kicks off on September 28 and will be open to artists in the USA. It's unclear when the finals will be livestreamed, but more details should be announced over the next weeks. The grand prize consists of: a Billboard cover, a music video, studio time to record a first single, and tickets to the Billboard Music Awards.
