A few months ago, Tesla announced that it has selected Samsung Foundry to manufacture its AI5 and AI6 chips. While the company has already completed the tape-out process for the AI5 chip, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has now revealed that Samsung Foundry will produce another upcoming processor for the automaker.

Tesla's AI4 Plus chip could be fabricated on Samsung Foundry's 7nm process node

During Tesla's Q1 2026 earnings call, Musk announced plans to launch a new chip designated as the AI4.1 or AI4 Plus. Mass production is expected to begin at Samsung Foundry sometime next year, though the exact timeline depends on when Samsung completes necessary facility modifications. It could be based on Samsung's 7nm process, similar to the AI4 chip.

The AI4 Plus is intended for use in the company's HW4 Plus self-driving computer. Each HW4 Plus system will feature two AI4 Plus chips paired with 32GB of RAM, bringing the total system memory to 64GB.

Musk also clarified that the AI5 chip will not be integrated into Tesla's vehicles in the immediate future, noting that the current AI4 hardware remains sufficient for Full Self-Driving capabilities. Instead, the AI5 will be utilized in the Optimus humanoid robot and within Tesla's data centers.
