Sony won’t launch any new first-party PlayStation game till March 2025

In the financial results for Q3 2023, Sony announced that it will not release a new game in any major existing series for PlayStation till March 2025. The latest news comes as a huge disappointment for PlayStation users as they won’t be able to play any new major first-party title for at least another year. On the brighter side, the brand says that it is currently developing major titles. Expect those to come out after March 2025.

Regarding first-party software, we aim to continue to focus on producing high-quality works and developing live service games, but, while major projects are currently under development, we do not plan to release any new major existing franchise titles next fiscal year like God of War Ragnarök and Marvelʼs Spider-Man.

So, why won’t Sony launch a new game in any major existing series for PlayStation till March 2025? Well, there seem to be two reasons behind it. First, the COO and CFO of the brand, Hiroki Totoki, suggests that the creative teams have not scheduled the development and release of games properly. Second, the company is focusing on third-party software sales at the moment instead of PlayStation-exclusive titles.

In the financial results, Hiroki also said that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) has entered “the latter half of the console cycle” and therefore, the company expects a gradual decline in the sale of the product from the next fiscal year. Microsoft, on the other hand, is planning to launch two new gaming consoles by the end of 2026. One of them will be a high-end console similar to the Xbox Series X and the other will be a handheld and dockable console.
