Samsung announced the P9 and P7 portable SSDs today at Gamescom 2026. These are the company's next-generation offerings designed to meet the intense storage demands of large-scale games, AI workloads, and ultra-high resolution video.

These new SSDs promise considerable speed enhancements, thanks to their support for the USB4 standard.

They offer double the read and write speeds over the previous generation

The Samsung P9 SSD now offers sequential read speeds of up to 4,000 MB/s and write speeds of up to 3,800 MB/s. These are industry leading figures, and roughly double that of the previous generation.

Previous-gen T9 SSDs with a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface provided sequential read and write speeds of around 2,000 MB/s. The P9 also offers the world's first 8TB portable SSD with speeds of up to 4,000 MB/s. All models support 12K direct recording for professional video production as well.

The P7 SSD also has USB4 support, and is meant more for everyday use in desktops, laptops, gaming consoles, smartphones, and more. The SSD survived 2-meter drop testing in addition to shock and vibration testing, ensuring that users' data remains protected in every situation.

Samsung will offer the P9 SSD in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB sizes for $339, $649, $1,349, and $2,699 respectively.
