Samsung's Exynos smartphone chips have faced criticism for overheating and sudden performance throttling in certain previous models. However, the company has improved them over the past couple of years. Moreover, the South Korean firm also makes high-performance Exynos chips for cars, and they will now be used in BMW cars.
A report from Chosun Biz claims that BMW has selected Samsung's Exynos Auto V720 chip for its next-generation electric vehicle, the new iX3. It is the first car to use BMW's next-generation electric platform. The Exynos chip will then be used in BMW's future electric and internal combustion engine cars.
The Exynos Auto V720 is said to be a 5nm chip, and Samsung hasn't officially announced it yet. The Exynos Auto V920, which was launched in 2023, is a 5nm chip as well. It features a 10-core CPU and AMD's RDNA2-based Xclipse GPU. It will reportedly be used in BMW's next-generation 7 Series cars.
Samsung's Exynos Auto series chips power in-vehicle infotainment systems. They are designed by Samsung's System LSI division and manufactured by Samsung Foundry. Besides playing back music and other media, they can also provide drivers with real-time data captured by cameras and other sensors in the car.
In 2019, Samsung started supplying Exynos Auto chips to Audi. In 2023, Exynos Auto chips used in Volkswagen cars. The South Korean firm also started supplying the Exynos V920 chip to Hyundai in 2023.
