Samsung makes fun of heavy iPhones in new Galaxy S25 Edge ad

The Galaxy S25 Edge launch gave Samsung a new opportunity to take another friendly jab at its biggest rival, Apple. Samsung has done this dance many times before; nearly every time it has created something that Apple hasn't (yet). You might remember the “On the fence” ad campaign involving foldable Galaxy phones.

This time, Samsung pokes fun at Apple through a short video on Instagram, demonstrating how much heavier the iPhone is than the lightweight Galaxy S25 Edge. In this short ad, Samsung hung the two phones from bundles of helium balloons. Once they start popping, the Galaxy S25 Edge stays floating in the air, while the iPhone crash-lands.

Samsung doesn't actually call the iPhone by name. It refers to it as “Other Phone,” but for a split second, we can clearly see that this other device is an iPhone — likely an iPhone 16 Pro.

Both the Galaxy S25 Edge and the iPhone 16 Pro use titanium frames, but they are fundamentally different in their design approach.

Because of its thin profile and use of titanium, the Galaxy S25 Edge really does have an impressive size-to-weight ratio compared to many other phones that are smaller. It's only 1 gram heavier than the 6.2-inch Galaxy S25.

When announcing the Galaxy S25 Edge, Samsung said this phone will “accelerate important innovation across the mobile industry.” In other words, the Edge should inspire other smartphone OEMs to create thin and lightweight handsets.

Interestingly, rumors point to Apple developing a much thinner device, i.e., the so-called iPhone 17 Air. Apple will supposedly unveil it in September. The iPhone 17 Air will undoubtedly compete with the Galaxy S25 Edge, and once it becomes official, Apple may or may not take its turn at making fun of Samsung. The dance continues.
