Samsung forms Home Connectivity Alliance to improve interoperability of smart home devices

As a part of its CES 2022 announcement, the company revealed that it has joined the Home Connectivity Alliance. This new alliance aims to improve the interoperability between various smart home standards and offer greater safety. Samsung is the founding member of HCA, along with various other leading home appliances and smart home brands.

HCA's current list of members includes American Standard, Arcelik, Electrolux, GE Appliances, Haier, Samsung, and Trane. While this sounds a lot like Matter, which Samsung has already committed to supporting, the South Korean firm said in its press release that it would work with other HCA members to “develop shared guidelines for cloud-to-cloud interoperability.” It means that HCA focuses more on cloud-based smart home products rather than on the local network.

Samsung says it wants to bring more openness to its smart home platform. In the future, users can add non-SmartThings and legacy devices to their current smart home setup. All these smart devices can then be controlled using the SmartThings dashboard. The new smart home alliance also aims to keep users and their personal data secure. More brands could join HCA in the future.

Yoon Ho Choi, President of Home Connectivity Alliance, said, “We are pleased to have Samsung as one of the founding members of the Home Connectivity Alliance. It is the support of global manufacturers like Samsung that makes HCA uniquely qualified to establish interoperability guidelines for long-life appliances and systems in the home, ultimately delivering safe, simple, and elegant consumer experiences.

Samsung’s product naming has a grammar problem

Samsung’s product naming has a grammar problem

I'm a big fan of Samsung using proper nouns to label most of its home electronics. For instance, PC monitors names are no longer just a string of seemingly random letters and numbers. Instead, they belong to lineups named ‘Odyssey' or ‘ViewFinity.' It makes Samsung look better instead of coming across as a company that […]

The US FTC (Fair Trade Commission) has ordered Samsung to stop unfair business practices in the country.
