Samsung unveils ISOCELL HP3, its second 200MP camera sensor

After launching its first 200MP camera sensor for smartphones ten months ago, Samsung has unveiled its second 200MP camera sensor. The ISOCELL HP3 is the company's newest 200MP camera sensor, but it is pegged as a lower model than the ISOCELL HP3 due to its smaller size.

The ISOCELL HP3 is a 1/1.4-inch camera sensor with 200MP resolution and 0.56μm native pixel size. In comparison, the ISOCELL HP1 is a 1/1.22-inch sensor with 0.64μm pixels. Samsung says that a reduction of pixel size by 12% allows the new sensor to fit in more devices, and the module takes 20% less area. It can capture 14-bit images for up to 4 trillion color support.

ISOCELL HP3 has Super QPD autofocus for more reliable performance

Samsung's newest 200MP sensor also features the Super QPD autofocus mechanism. All the pixels in the ISOCELL HP3 have autofocusing capabilities. It uses a single lens over four-adjacent pixels to detect the phase differences in both horizontal and vertical directions. It reportedly results in faster and more accurate autofocus.

The ISOCELL HP3 is also capable of recording 4K 120fps videos and 8K 30fps videos. Unlike Samsung's 108MP camera sensors, its 200MP sensors can capture 8K videos with a minimal loss in the field of view.

Smart ISO Pro with three conversion gains offers better HDR performance

Thanks to pixel binning, the new sensor can capture 50MP images (2×2 binning) with 1.12μm pixels or 12.5MP images (4×4 binning) with 2.24μm pixel size. Other features of the ISOCELL HP3 include Smart ISO Pro, which captures images by combining three conversion gains (high-ISO, mid-ISO, and low-ISO) for better dynamic range.

Samsung says that the ISOCELL HP3's samples are available for testing right now, and the mass production of the sensor is set to start later this year.

Samsung ISOCELL HP3 200MP Camera Sensor

JoonSeo Yim, Executive Vice President of the Sensor Business Team at Samsung Electronics, said, “Samsung has continuously led the image sensor market trend through its technology leadership in high-resolution sensors with the smallest pixels. With our latest and upgraded 0.56μm 200MP ISOCELL HP3, Samsung will push on to deliver epic resolutions beyond professional levels for smartphone camera users.
