In July, Samsung’s employees working at its manufacturing plants in South Korea went on an indefinite strike demanding a wage rise. While there’s no information if the company was able to solve that issue, it is now facing a similar situation in India.
On Monday, Samsung’s employees working at its manufacturing plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu went on an indefinite strike, demanding a pay rise. They have also asked the company to offer equal pay to workers with similar experience. Reportedly, half of the workforce didn’t report for work on the first day of the week.
Samsung’s manufacturing plant in Sriperumbudur is one of the company’s two factories in the country, with the other being in Uttar Pradesh. The factory in Sriperumbudur has around 1,800 workers, and it is mainly focused on manufacturing home appliances, such as refrigerators and washing machines. Reportedly, the products that it manufactures account for $12 billion in sales, which is about 20-30% of the company’s revenue in India.

The strike could hamper the production at the facility, which could disrupt sales, resulting in a loss of revenue, and therefore, profit. The workers have put up posters outside the factory on the tents under which they are sitting asking the company to discuss and solve demands from the labor union with union officials. A Samsung official said that it actively engages with workers to address any grievances they may have and comply with all laws and regulations.
