As per Samsung's 2023 Global Sleep Health Study, the UK is a nation of restless sleepers, with over a fifth (22%) of adults confessing that they've accidentally fallen asleep at work. The UK is the country with the lowest sleep efficiency in the Europe region. The study categorized people into eight types, depending on their sleep duration and quality, and assigned them a ‘Sleep Animal.' This study used the Galaxy Watch 6 to track people's sleep.
The most common Sleep Animal in the UK, as per Samsung's health study, is the Nervous Penguin. It is assigned to those who maintain circadian rhythms but face frequent interruptions in sleep, lowering their sleep efficiency. The study also revealed that people have fallen asleep in the cinema (29%), the club (12%), and even on the toilet (10%). So, what's the cause of this? Over 45% of people in the study admitted that they stay up too late, with the average bedtime of adults being 11:54 PM.
Over 32% of people say that working too much is stopping them from getting enough sleep, while 25% claim that overindulging in food is to blame for their sleep habits. Even globally, the average sleep duration of people has dropped from 7 hours and 3 minutes to 6 hours and 59 minutes, falling below the recommended 7-hour duration.

One good thing is that people actively tracking their sleep each week has increased by 182% in 2023 compared to 2021 figures. People now know that they're struggling with sleep. Over 43% of people are trying to avoid caffeine intake, while 17% of people are taking sleep medication. However, only 12% of people use a smartwatch to monitor their sleep quality.
Annika Bizon, Samsung UK's Marketing and Omnichannel Director, said, “Samsung is committed to understanding sleep health better, and through analyzing the sleep patterns of millions worldwide, we’re able to understand how technology can play a role in helping people establish healthier habits. To start improving the quality of your sleep, understanding how you sleep is key, and the Galaxy Watch6 offers actionable tips to help users overcome bad habits.“
