The launch of Samsung's new foldable phones is just around the corner, and the company today revealed a key detail about the durability improvements it has made.

Samsung is introducing Flex Titanium technology with these new devices. It utilizes two titanium-based components within the display panel to significantly enhance durability.

Reduced crease visibility is an added benefit

The display panel for Samsung's upcoming foldable phones features a titanium-alloy film and a titanium plate. These components work together to balance flexibility with strength while making the crease less visible.

Titanium is a highly versatile material that's used in advanced applications such as satellite antennas and the wheels of a Mars rover.

The titanium-alloy film sits below the OLED panel and provides 20x greater mechanical stiffness compared to a polymer film. It does that while only measuring one-third the thickness of an average human hair. The flexible titanium plate sits below that to support the display module from beneath and improves durability over repeated folding and unfolding.

These innovations don't add any heft or considerable weight to the display panel. On the contrary, they strike the perfect balance between greater structural stability, flexibility, and strength while ensuring that Samsung's newest foldables remain some of the thinnest phones in their category.

Samsung's claims are impressive, and they'll surely be put through the wringer in folding tests that are done once the new devices are available. Samsung's Unpacked event is scheduled for July 22 in London where it will likely unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8.
