TL;DR

  • Samsung's HBM market share rose to 33% in Q2 and is projected to reach nearly 40% by Q4 this year.
  • The gains are driven by stronger HBM4 sales and improved production yields, which are boosting competitiveness.
  • Samsung has already delivered HBM4E samples and is planning to expand facilities for next-generation HBM5 chips.

SK Hynix continues to enjoy a dominant lead in the lucrative high-bandwith memory segment, but Samsung is now closing the gap rapidly.

According to the latest projections, the company's HBM market share is expected to hit around 40% by the end of this year.

KB Securities has estimated that Samsung Electronics' global HBM market share, which was at 33% in the second quarter of this year, will reach nearly 40% in the fourth quarter.

Samsung's market share has been trending upward throughout this year. It jumped by 12% compared to the first quarter to reach 33% in the second quarter. It's now projected to rise by 7% to hit close to 40% by the end of this year.

HBM4 chips are behind this surge, with Samsung expecting that its HBM4 sales will account for more than 60% of all high-bandwidth memory sales for the second half of 2026.

The rise in shipments is partly attributed to more stable yields for the production process. Higher yields mean that most chips from the same wafer can be sold, and this also helps increase the cost competitiveness.

Samsung is also actively pushing forward with new technologies, with HBM4E samples already having been delivered to customers, with additional plans to expand production facilities for next-generation HBM5 chips.
