Samsung makes not only smartphones and TVs but also semiconductor chips and several other electronic components. In fact, it is the second-biggest chip manufacturing firm and the world's biggest memory chip maker in the world. The South Korean firm held on to its second position in the semiconductor chip manufacturing segment in the previous quarter, according to a new report.

Samsung Foundry was the second-biggest chip manufacturing company in the world in Q3 2023, according to a new report from TrendForce. In fact, the company improved its revenue by 14.1% compared to Q2 2023. According to the numbers, Samsung's semiconductor chip manufacturing revenue was $3.69 billion in the third quarter of this year. In the second quarter, its revenue was $3.23 billion. Its market share improved from 11.7% in Q2 2023 to 12.4% in Q3 2023. TrendForce says the growth drivers for Samsung Foundry were diverse and included orders for Qualcomm's low to mid-range 5G chips, 5G modems, and 28nm OLED display drivers. It has also fabricated Samsung's own Exynos 2400 process using a 4nm process and will likely make the Exynos 2500 (a.k.a Dream Chip) using its second-generation 3nm process (3GAP).

Samsung is the only company other than TSMC to have developed a 3nm chip manufacturing process, but it hasn't found any big client for its new process. Still, the company has announced plans to develop 1.4nm and 2nm chip fabrication process nodes by 2027. It has grand plans to defeat TSMC by the year 2030 through big investments and technology research.

TSMC is still the world's biggest semiconductor chip fabrication firm by a long mile. Its market share improved from 56.4% in the second quarter to 57.9% in the third quarter. The company's revenue was a whopping $17.24 billion in Q3 2023, which is a 10.2% rise compared to the previous quarter. GlobalFoundries, which was once a part of AMD, is the third-biggest chip manufacturer, with a market share of 6.2% and revenue of 1.85 billion. Taiwan's UMC and China's SMIC (which made Huawei's Kirin 7000s processor) are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.

HuaHong Group from China is ranked sixth, Israel's Tower Semiconductor is ranked seventh, and Taiwan's VIS is ranked eighth on the list. Intel's IFS (Intel Foundry Services) appeared in the top ten positions for the first time in recent quarters, ranking at the ninth position. It has a market share of 1% and revenue of $311 million. PSMC (Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation) is the tenth biggest semiconductor chip manufacturing firm in the world, with a 1% market share and $305 million in revenue.

Samsung might do something unthinkable with future Exynos chips

Part of the problem with Exynos chips is their fabrication quality. Samsung Foundry, which has historically made Exynos chips, isn't as good at fabricating chips as TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company). So, Samsung might do something unthinkable and get its Exynos chips made by its rival TSMC. Future Exynos chips could be made by TSMC […]

Latest US orders on China bring more pain for Samsung Foundry

The United States has a mission to prevent China from accessing advanced semiconductors. It doesn't hurt that some of the world's top semiconductor firms are based in countries that are longstanding allies of the US – Taiwan and South Korea. That provides the administration with lot of levers to put pressure on its arch rival. […]

Samsung US job openings reveal a burning desire to take on TSMC

Samsung's Foundry division lost over a billion dollars last quarter and has shut 50% of its production capacity, but the conglomerate still has a burning desire to compete against TSMC in the lucrative contract chipmaking industry. To that end, it's keeping up with significant investments in the foundry arm, particularly for the new chip plants […]

Here’s how shockingly bad Samsung’s 3nm yields currently are

Much has been written about Samsung Foundry's struggle to raise its 3nm yields to the point where it would start getting orders from major customers which have failed to materialize so far. The poor yields are likely what forced Samsung MX to go Snapdragon 8 Elite-only for the Galaxy S25 series, because the foundry can't […]

Is a foundry spin-off the answer to Samsung’s $200 billion dollar problem?

Samsung Foundry was established to challenge TSMC's dominance in the contract chipmaking space but the division has remained unable to take any significant chunk of the market. The reported yield issues on the 3nm process aren't helping as major clients, including Qualcomm whose chips Samsung uses in its phones, have all opted for TSMC's tried […]
