According to The Korea Herald, Samsung Electronics is expected to announce its plans this week to go carbon neutral by 2050. The company could also declare a plan to join RE100, a global initiative to shift the energy use of the world's most influential businesses to 100% renewable electricity. It is expected to outline its plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its production line, known as ‘Scope 1 Emissions.' It will also discuss how it will cut emissions from indirect sources such as electricity and air conditioning, known as ‘Scope 2 Emissions.'
At the IFA 2022 expo, Han Jong-hee, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman, hinted that the company would announce some kind of sustainability plans that “can be put into practice with clear goals to achieve.” If the latest report is true, it looks like Jong-hee was referring to the company's carbon neutrality plans.
Despite being the wealthiest conglomerate among the top four companies in the country, which include SK, Hyundai, and LG, Samsung is the only brand to announce carbon neutrality plans. Its major production sites in China, Europe, and the US already use 100% renewable energy. Its renewable energy use in Brazil and Mexico stands at 94% and 71%. respectively.
