Large Galaxy Note 9 update brings September security patch

After the Galaxy Note 8 and the Galaxy S9 series, the Galaxy Note 9 is now next in line to receive a new update introducing the September 2019 security patch.

The update carries firmware version N960FXXU3CSI3 and is available in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Romania, and a few other European countries at the moment. Despite the update weighing a hefty 663MB, the changelog looks rather generic. It only mentions better security along with obscure performance improvements to the camera.

A large update that doesn’t have a lot to show for itself

Samsung seems to have built a habit of repeating the same changelog for the Galaxy Note 9 once every two major software releases; therefore, we wouldn’t be surprised if the camera experience on last year’s flagship phone has remained the same following this latest update.

For now, we can confirm that Galaxy Note 10-specific features like AR Doodle didn’t make it into this update. Likewise, there is no Live Focus Video or Link to Windows, so at this moment it’s rather difficult to explain why this release weighs more than 660MB. We couldn’t find any meaningful changes, but we will continue to investigate and update this story as we find out more.

Until then, if you’re a Galaxy Note 9 owner, you should receive an update notification at any moment, assuming you haven’t already. Alternatively, you can try to trigger the update manually by opening Settings, navigating to Software update and tapping Download and install. Feel free to leave a comment and let us know if you’ve found any new features that have not been mentioned in the changelog.

  • Model: SM-N960F
  • Dimensions: 161.9 x 76.4 x 8.8mm
  • Display: 6.4" (162.5mm) Super AMOLED
  • CPU: Exynos 9810
  • Camera: 12 CMOS Dual OIS (F1.5/F2.4) & Telephoto: 12MP AF F2.4)

I installed the update yesterday morning and it seems that the battery drain from the August security patch has been fixed. We’ll see in the next days.

I found the reboot problem! When you have selected like me safe restart and have add security code then the systeem will reboot two times and asking for sim code to start.
When you disable this it will start normal.

So this is a bug on the semtember patch!!!

Just updated my unlocked UK Note9 and it seems to have added the call and message continuity feature for me, but it’s under advanced features and is called ‘call and text on other devices’ instead.

But tried it out and confirmed it works with my tab s5e 👌🏼

Samsung probably changed its name at the end of August.

It is a massive hardware issue… that said, they seem to be working on it. I have 2 note 9s and one was “fixed” by the last update, but it didn’t seem to stick. My other one had no change.

The “fix” was to direct the software to stop using the 2x lens when it freaked out. Hopefully, they continue to develop workarounds for it. I upgraded to the note 10, and my daugher refuses to send it in for repair.

Esse recurso veio até o momento para a variante exynos, os snapdragons até hoje não receberam essa melhoria aqui no BR.

Probably a fix for the occasional ‘Camera Failed’ bug in Night Mode.

Has anyone noticed significant downgrade in performance and reduced battery life since august security patch because i have seen many post regarding same on samsung members app and also observed it on my note 9

I noticed quite the contrary, but maybe it’s just luck

I had this problem in August, the phone was slow and the battery was draining fast.
I had to go back to the factory settings, and the problem was solved.
I talked about this problem here.

Me too, therefore I already downgraded to July one until a further notice!!

How did you do that? Since the August update on my T-mobile branded Note 9 the lock screen won’t open to allow the Google Voice Assistant to respond to questions/requests. I have to manually swipe it to get the response.

I haven’t had a downgrade in performance but I have noticed that the battery drains much quicker than before. I haven’t got the September security patch year.
