A lot of people are still confused: is Samsung Chinese, or is it from another country? The truth is that Samsung was founded in South Korea and to this day it remains a Korean company.

Like any massive multi-national conglomerate, Samsung has subsidiaries and various businesses in countries across the globe, but the ultimate authority rests with the Korean entity.

Samsung is South Korea's largest family-owned conglomerate

It’s easy for people who don’t follow tech or business closely to assume many Asian brands are Chinese. China is the global manufacturing hub and it dominates in many sectors, including mobile devices, home appliances, and consumer electronics. It has countless homegrown brands that compete with established players in those markets.

But Samsung existed since long before China became a global manufacturing powerhouse. Samsung was founded in South Korea back in 1938 as a trading company that dealt in insurance, textiles, food products, and more.

Over time, it evolved into a highly diversified business group. Samsung Electronics, founded in 1969, grew into a global leader in consumer electronics, home appliances, and mobile technology.

Today, Samsung is also the world's leading supplier of display panels, one of the most important players in the memory semiconductor industry, an emerging advanced foundry, a leading supplier of battery solutions, and more.

The company continues to be incredibly diversified, with other businesses that include insurance, securities, pharmaceuticals, construction, and much more.

What surprises many people is how limited Samsung’s presence in China actually is. Its smartphone market share is in the low single digits, its display panel facilities there have largely been sold off, and it doesn’t manufacture most of its phones in China. Vietnam and India are mostly where Samsung phones are made and then exported worldwide, not China.

It wouldn't be wrong to say that Samsung is the poster child of corporate success in South Korea. It is the country's largest family-owned conglomerate, with its revenue making up almost a quarter of South Korea's entire GDP. It’s about as Korean as a company can get.
