Apple might be risking another Bendgate controversy.

A new epic battle between Samsung and Apple will almost surely ensue later this year. The company from Cupertino is said to release a new iPhone model, and comparisons between it and Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge will be inevitable. However, Samsung may already have the upper hand in one regard.
The so-called iPhone 17 Air will reportedly focus on lightness and thinness, much like the Galaxy S25 Edge. Nevertheless, the two phones may walk very different paths to achieve their goals. Where the Galaxy S25 Edge uses exotic materials like titanium, the iPhone 17 Air might not.
According to a weight analysis shared on yeux112‘s blog, the iPhone 17 Air may sport a Series 7000 aluminum frame instead of one made from titanium. This decision, if true, emphasizes Apple's desire to create a lighter phone.
Aluminum is lighter than titanium, but titanium is tougher and can allow manufacturers to create thin and light devices through clever engineering. It's a balancing act. However, Apple may decide to take the easy road toward lightness by using a lighter and softer material.
If true, it's a bold choice from the company that created the iPhone 6 — a phone that was easy to bend and led to the term Bendgate. Then again, manufacturing processes have improved over the last decade, and maybe Apple can create a thin and light yet tough aluminum iPhone.
Still, if the rumors are true, it almost feels like Apple may have already lost one critical round to Samsung and the Galaxy S25 Edge.
As for the iPhone 17 Air's weight, the report estimates that the phone weighs around 146 grams. This would indeed make it lighter than the Galaxy S25 Edge. The latter weighs 163 grams, which, to be fair, is enough to beat most other phones, many of which have smaller screens.
Time will tell if Apple will indeed use aluminum instead of titanium for the iPhone 17 Air. Even some of the early Galaxy S25 Edge rumors were undecided about which material the phone will use, so it's safe to say nothing is confirmed yet. Apple may introduce the iPhone 17 Air in September.
