At the Connect event that was held in September this year, Meta announced Backdrop for Instagram, a tool powered by generative AI that can replace the background in an image with the one that you describe to it in the text format. Back then, the company hadn’t revealed an exact timeline for the release of the feature. Well, it is finally here. Meta has started rolling out Backdrop for Instagram Stories on Android and iOS in the United States.

You will find the Backdrop feature in the Instagram app in the photo editing menu. To access it, click on the icon that represents a person with a square frame behind them. Once you click it, the app will show you an animation recognizing and selecting the background, and then it replaces the background with a checkered pattern. It will then ask you to “describe the backdrop you want.” You can then type any background that you want. For example, you can ask the app to put mountains in the background and it will do it.

Once you post the photo that you edited with the Backdrop tool on Instagram, the platform will show a tag on your story that says “AI · Backdrop by Instagram” to let people know that the image isn’t fully real and you have edited it using generative AI. As the new feature opens up a whole new world of possibilities, expect it to become massively popular in the coming days. Meta hasn’t said when it will become available in other regions.
