I bought the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra because Samsung fixed the one thing I needed it to

The obvious upgrade.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra

TL;DR

  • The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra appeals to Galaxy Z Fold 7 owners by keeping a familiar form factor while adding several meaningful upgrades.
  • Its biggest improvement is battery life: a 5,000mAh silicon-carbon battery replaces the 4,400mAh cell in the previous model.
  • Faster 45W wired and 20W wireless charging help make all-day use easier without constant battery anxiety.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the hero foldable device this year. A new form factor, an interesting design, and the wider form factor have made it a clear hit.

For many Galaxy Z Fold 7 owners like myself, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is more appealing, not just because it's the successor to last year's model but also because some of the improvements made position it as a very compelling upgrade.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra sells itself to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 owner

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has a lot going for it. Key highlights include the 50-megapixel ultra wide sensor, brighter and sharper foldable display, an anti-reflective coating, etc.

All that's impressive, but that's not the reason why I'm upgrading. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 offers decent battery life, but it does require me to be judicious about use on a heavy day. Prolonged use of the inner display, navigation, calls, video, can have me worrying about the charger by mid-afternoon.

You get used to that level of daily anxiety to the point of not questioning it, but then the obvious upgrade appears and you wonder why you put up with that for so long.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is that obvious upgrade. It has a 5,000mAh battery compared to its predecessor's 4,400mAh cell. It's objectively better battery tech as well, with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra utilizing a silicon-carbon battery over last year's lithium-ion battery.

Combine that with faster 45W wired fast charging and 20W wireless charging, the device sells itself to a Galaxy Z Fold 7 owner who doesn't want the wider form factor of the Galaxy Z Fold 8. It genuinely delivers all-day use without forcing conservation.
