At CES 2026, Samsung showcased a book-style foldable display for smartphones that has no visible crease, unlike foldable displays in current foldable devices, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which have a visible crease.
This is the first display of its kind, and a major breakthrough. Since Samsung showcased the screen, people have been wondering how the South Korean tech giant has made this possible. Well, we have the answer.
On X, a popular tipster, Ice Universe, has shed light on how Samsung is making crease-less book-style foldable display for phones. According to them, in traditional foldable screens, when you fold the display, the stress from folding the screen is concentrated in a single line, which creates a crease that is visible to the naked eye.
In Samsung’s crease-free foldable display, there are laser-drilled micro perforations, which spread the folding stress across a wider area. As a result, the visibility of the crease minimises to a point that it is not visible to the naked eye in most viewing conditions. You can take a look at the image below to understand it in a better way.
Samsung’s foldable display with no visible crease is said to make it into Apple’s first foldable iPhone. The South Korean tech giant is expected to use this screen for its own devices with the next iteration of foldable phones, which could be the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
There are two big issues people have with foldable smartphones. First, their displays have visible creases, which look ugly. Second, these phones (especially their displays) aren't as durable as traditional phones. With Samsung solving the first problem, foldable phones are one step closer to going mainstream.
