Last year, Google showcased a feature called Ask Photos for the Google Photos app. It uses AI to let you find memories more easily via natural language conversations. After brief testing in October 2024, Google released it a few weeks ago. However, the feature was too slow, forcing the company halt the rollout. Now, the feature is rolling out widely in the USA.

Google Photos' Ask Photos now widely available in the USA

Google has announced that it is widely rolling out the Ask Photos feature for Google Photos users in the USA. It is also making the AI search experience faster. The Ask Photos feature is powered by Gemini, and it replaces the Search button in the Google Photos app's bottom bar. It is available for both Android and iOS versions of the app. You can now use it on your Galaxy phone or tablet if you live in the USA and meet the following criteria:

Are 18 years or older.

Live in the United States of America (USA).

Set your Google Account language set to US English.

Have the Face Groups feature in Google Photos turned on.

Using this feature, you can not only find photos and videos more easily but you can even find context and information from your Google Photos library. For example, you can ask it to find your passport number or your car's number plate. You can even ask it what food you ate during your recent trip.

Google is using a mix of traditional search and Gemini AI-powered search to bring results faster while continuing to find context using Gemini models. If you don't like the new search experience, you can disable it completely from the app's settings.
