TL;DR

  • Galaxy SmartTag 3 is smaller and lighter than SmartTag 2, but it drops the built-in loop and lanyard hole in favor of an optional accessory case.
  • It keeps core tracking features and adds longer Compass View range, better battery life, and iPhone support for the first time.
  • The tracker launches in Korea on October 7, with the U.S. coming later and more markets following in 2027.

Samsung is finally ready to introduce a new location for Galaxy phone users and beyond. The company has announced the Galaxy SmartTag 3 recently, and although it serves the same location-tracking functionality as the SmartTag 2, it's been completely redesigned and upgraded in ways that matter.

Here's everything you need to know about Samsung's new Galaxy SmartTag 3, and more importantly, how it compares with its predecessor.

Galaxy SmartTag 3 vs SmartTag 2: Design

Samsung has taken a completely different design approach to its latest location tracker. It's back to being a simple puck without a built-in loop for lanyards. It doesn't even have a small lanyard hole like the original SmartTag.

The upside to this redesign is a more compact device. The new Galaxy SmartTag 3 is 35% smaller and 33% lighter than the SmartTag 2.

And hate it or love it, but Samsung wants to make up for the lack of a built-in lanyard hole/loop by selling an optional silicone loop case. The latter gives you more ways to effortlessly attach the tracker to your belongings.

In a way, you could argue that Samsung's design approach for the Galaxy SmartTag 3 was quite Apple-esque. The new design is lighter and more compact but less versatile out of the box without additional accessories.

Lastly, the Galaxy SmartTag 3 retains an IP67 dust and water resistance rating. It's available in two color options: white and black. The case will be available in a wider color variety.

Galaxy SmartTag 3 vs SmartTag 2: New and enhanced features

Just like the SmartTag 2, Samsung's new tracker offers useful features such as:

  • Place Notifications.
  • Location History.
  • Movement Alert.
  • NFC-powered Lost Mode.
  • SmartThings IoT Control.
  • Left Behind Alert.

These features are par for the course, but the standout additions and improvements include:

Indeed, for the first time in the Galaxy SmartTag lineup, the SmartTag 3 brings cross-platform compatibility and is now supported by Galaxy devices and iPhones alike.

When will the Galaxy SmartTag 3 go on sale?

We have good and mildly annoying news. The good news is that the Galaxy SmartTag 3 will debut very soon, on October 7. The bad news is that the October 7 launch will be limited to Korea.

The only other information Samsung shared about availability was that the USA will follow after Korea, and additional markets will join in 2027.

We will let you know when you'll be able to buy the Galaxy SmartTag 3 in more markets.
