Galaxy S25 Ultra display isn’t as scratch resistant as the S24 Ultra

One of the upgrades the Galaxy S25 Ultra received is an improved display protection from Corning called Gorilla Armor 2. It has similar core properties to the original Gorilla Armor, which Samsung first used for the Galaxy S24 Ultra last year.

However, there are some differences between the original Armor and the new Armor 2. And in one particular aspect, namely scratch resistance, it looks like the newer solution doesn't perform as well as Armor.

Gorilla Armor 2 is a display protection that Corning described as “The industry's first scratch-resistant, anti-reflective glass ceramic cover material for mobile devices.”

On the one hand, Corning tests cited by Samsung show that Armor 2 is highly resistant to drops and can survive falls up to 2.2 meters (7.2 feet) on concrete-like surfaces.

On the other hand, an independent test performed by YouTuber JerryRigEverything suggests that the Galaxy S25 Ultra's Gorilla Armor 2 panel isn't as resistant to scratches as the original Armor.

Let's rewind to 2024 for a moment. Last year, when YouTuber PBKReviews performed a scratch test on the Galaxy S24 Ultra using a Mohs hardness test kit, the Gorilla Armor panel scratched at level 7. Maybe even level 8, as the scratches at level 7 were so faint, it was difficult to tell if they were temporary marks.

A more recent Mohs hardness test performed on the new Galaxy S25 Ultra by JerryRigEverything shows that the Gorilla Armor 2 solution scratches at level 6, much like the previous solutions from Corning before Armor came along.

Exactly why this apparent downgrade had to happen is unclear, but glass work is very tricky. Unfortunately, there always seems to be a trade-off between scratch and shatter resistance, where you can't have the absolute best of both worlds.

In other words, too much scratch resistance can make a sheet of protective glass more susceptible to shatter damage and vice versa. That's just how glass physics seems to work, at least for these smartphone display protective solutions.

It is possible that Corning may have determined that the original Gorilla Armor display protection wasn't as shatter-resistant as the company would've liked. Corning may have dialed back the scratch-resistant properties to give Armor 2 a higher survivability rate to drops.

Whether or not the trade-off was worth it is debatable, but Corning might know best. Either way, the fortunate news is that the Galaxy S25 Ultra's display still offers unmatched anti-reflective properties and might be more shatter-resistant.
