Galaxy phones could get Apple Handoff-like functionality for seamless productivity

One of the major reasons people love being in Apple’s closed ecosystem is that their data, files, and apps sync seamlessly between their iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and Macs. And Google and Samsung have tried bringing some of that functionality to their laptops, phones, smartwatches, and tablets. In the near future, a functionality similar to Apple’s Handoff could come to Galaxy phones and tablets.

You can already share files, mouse/trackpad, keyboard, and wireless earbuds between Galaxy phones and tablets. But Google seems to be working on a feature called ‘Handoff’ to make it easier to continue tasks and access apps, media, and notifications across your Android and ChromeOS devices. Android Authority has spotted the yet-unannounced feature in Android’s Cross-Devices Services section.

Currently, Google allows sharing switching video calls from one Android/ChromeOS device to another and instant internet sharing between device signed into the same Google account. However, in the latest beta version (25.29.31) of Google Play Services, a feature has been spotted that allows accessing files across devices.

This feature sits alongside notifications sharing functionality that was recently spotted. While the file sharing feature isn’t active yet, its description reveals how it might work. After turning it on, it allows you to access files across devices. Once this feature is fully developed and announced, it will likely come to Galaxy phones, tablets, and Chromebooks.
