Samsung introduced its current policy of four major Android OS upgrades for flagship and mid-range smartphones in 2022. Before that, in 2020, the company committed to providing three major Android upgrades for select devices, including the Galaxy A52, Galaxy A52 5G, and Galaxy A52s, all of which made their market debut in 2021.
All Galaxy A52 models came preloaded with Android 11 and One UI 3 and have received three Android version updates and multiple One UI updates, so going forward, they will only be eligible to receive security updates.
Those security updates will come every three months for the Galaxy A52 and A52 5G for at least another year, and monthly for the Galaxy A52s. Whether or not security updates will be available after that remains to be seen.
The Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A51 5G received security updates for four years, but the A52 lineup could get a fifth year of security updates before Samsung discontinues support. As far as Android and One UI updates that bring new features are concerned, though, the party is now over.
If you own an A52 or one of its cousins, is this the right time to switch to a Galaxy A55? The Galaxy A55 launched running Android 14 and One UI 6.1 out of the box, but since it didn't come with any of the Galaxy S24's AI features, the software experience it currently provides is pretty similar to what you're getting on the A52, A52 5G, and A52s.
That makes waiting until at least next year the more sensible decision, especially since the next phone in the series—which will likely be called the Galaxy A56—might come with a promise of seven years of updates. It may also offer a larger uptick in performance, so you should weigh your decision carefully.
If you're not keen on waiting and want the Galaxy A55 right now, that's okay. The Galaxy A55 is one of the best Android phones in 2024, as we noted in our official review, and you can grab one by hitting the link below.
