In January this year, Disney+ announced that it would soon start offering content in the HDR10+ format, in addition to streaming it in Dolby Vision and HDR10 formats as it used to. It was a great piece of news for people having devices that support HDR10+ and not Dolby Vision, such as Samsung TV and Samsung Smart Monitor models, as they could watch content with better picture quality compared to watching titles in the HDR10 format. Well, Samsung TV users will be glad to know that they are getting the first dibs on the feature.
Samsung has announced that starting today, the Disney+ app will offer more than 1,000 Hulu titles in the HDR10+ format, and they will be available first on Samsung TVs. We assume that they will also be available on Samsung's smart monitors, as they run on the same OS as Samsung TVs, which is Tizen OS. The tech giant says that Disney+ will offer more Disney+ and Hulu titles in the HDR10+ format in the near future. Eventually, Disney+ could expand the feature to other platforms, including Android, Google TV, iOS, Windows, and the web.
For the last few years, most non-Samsung smart TVs have been offering support for all three major HDR formats available on the market: HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. With that, no matter which HDR format the content is in, the TV can play it natively, offering better picture quality than SDR does.
However, Samsung TVs have been offering support only for HDR10 and HDR10+ formats. It means that if a streaming platform offers a piece of content in Dolby Vision, the Samsung TV will play it in HDR10, which doesn't leverage a TV's picture capability as good as HDR10+ or Dolby Vision do.
Disney+ has been offering content in Dolby Vision and HDR10 formats. With that, Samsung TVs were able to play the content in HDR10. As mentioned earlier, HDR10 can not take advantage of a display's capability as well as Dolby Vision and HDR10+ can. As such, Samsung TV users couldn't enjoy the content in the picture quality their TV (or a TV with Dolby Vision support) was capable of displaying.
With Disney+ offering content in the HDR10+ format, Samsung TV users can rest assured that their TVs are displaying content in the best possible way they can (format-wise). It is worth pointing out that Samsung played an important role in developing HDR10+, and it is an open standard that is royalty-free. Dolby Vision, on the other hand, was developed by Dolby and requires brands to pay a royalty to adopt it.
It is one of the main reasons why Samsung is hesitant to adopt Dolby Vision.
