Samsung is among the very few manufacturers who've made and sold a tri-folding phone. The Galaxy Z TriFold only got a limited launch, but its established Samsung's ability to push the very limits of smartphone engineering.
Huawei, one of China's top contenders, is set to launch a new tri-fold phone next month that would be the best rival yet for Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold.
The company has confirmed that it will launch the Huawei Mate XT 2 on September 7, 2026. This is Huawei's second tri-folding phone and it reportedly comes with a major change.
The device will ditch Huawei's earlier foldable mechanism to adopt one that's similar to Samsung's. This means that the Mate XT 2 will unfold in a manner that's similar to the Galaxy Z TriFold.
Since China remains unable to source top-of-the-line chipsets from the likes of Qualcomm, the device will feature Huawei's own Kirin 9050 Pro chipset alongside other memory and storage upgrades. It's also expected to significant reduce the crease visibility on the device.
Samsung hasn't made a successor to the Galaxy Z TriFold as yet, but there are reports that the company has one in the pipeline for 2027. When it does arrive, it should comprehensively answer any questions that the Mate XT 2 asks of it.
Fans would certainly hope that the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 ends up being launched widely and in far greater numbers than its predecessor.
