Samsung recently made the Google Messages app the default messaging app for its flagship phones in the United States. In other markets, it continues to push its own native Messages app as the default option.

However, a lot of people choose to use the Google Messages app on their devices. If you're one of them, you might want to take note. A bug in the app is draining your phone's battery by leaving the camera on.

There is a workaround for this Google Messages bug

Reports reveal that there's a bug in the Google Messages app that leaves the camera open in the background. This causes the device to overheat and also lose battery life. The bug is related to a feature in the app that lets users easily take a picture and attach it to a message.

A live feed for the camera is displayed in the view for attaching images from the gallery in case you want to take a new picture. A recent update to the app has introduced a bug that leaves this camera feed running occasionally even when the Messages app is in the background. This leads to overheating and rapid battery drain.

Google hasn't acknowledged the bug at this point in time. However, it goes without saying that the company should soon roll out an update with a fix. There is a workaround to prevent this bug from draining your phone's battery. Simply deny Google Messages the permission to use your phone's camera. This can be done through the App Info menu in the Settings app.
