TL;DR

  • AMD CEO Lisa Su said the company is still exploring partnership opportunities with Samsung for both memory chips and foundry services.
  • Any deal would build on a memorandum of understanding signed in March covering AI memory chips and computing technology.
  • Earlier reports said Samsung may be a priority supplier of HBM4 memory chips for AMD's AI accelerators.

Samsung is an indispensable partner for companies that are competing in the AI hardware segment. It can offer memory chips, semiconductor manufacturing and packaging services, HVAC solutions for data centers, and a lot more.

AMD has been eyeing a partnership with Samsung for a while now, and the company's CEO has reiterated that AMD continues to explore a foundry partnership with the Korean giant.

Samsung has what the AI hardware companies want

AMD CEO Lisa Su was in South Korea this week where she met with top executives at Samsung. Su said that the US-based chipmaker is exploring partnership opportunities with Samsung Electronics for both memory chips and foundry.

Su also had meetings lined up with other major South Korean companies that can provide the solutions AMD requires to effectively compete in the AI hardware segment. She met with executives at SK Hynix as well, which is another leading supplier of memory chips for AI hardware.

Any potential deal between Samsung and AMD would stem from the memorandum of understanding that the two companies signed back in March this year.

The memorandum covers AI memory chips and computing technology. Earlier reports have also suggested that AMD has selected Samsung as a priority supplier of HBM4 memory chips for its AI accelerators.
