70% of foldable phones manufactured in Q1 could be Galaxy Z Flip 3 clamshells

Samsung manufactured around 1.4 million foldable smartphones in December 2021, which translates to a Year-on-Year increase of a whopping 3,435%. According to DSCC, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was the most successful foldable phone at nearly 1 million units produced last month.

Korea, Europe, and the US were the largest foldable phone markets in 2021, with demand rising YoY in the US, especially. This year, market watchers expect demand to maintain an upward trend in Q1, particularly in Europe, where Samsung could spend 56% of its foldable production capacity.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 will continue to lead the way in Q1 and drive foldable prices down

Samsung's foldable phone output in Q1 should increase by 568% Year-on-Year and exceed 1.5million units. Although market watchers estimate demand to fall nearly 60% in Q2, the company will post healthy numbers in the first quarter of the year, in large part thanks to the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

The latter clamshell device could account for 70% of Samsung's foldable phone output in Q1, but demand will slow down the next quarter. Nevertheless, because Samsung expects to procure 3M more foldable panels in 2022, market watchers suspect foldable phone prices to continue to decline by Q3 when the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 should get revealed.
