2026 will bring a major change to your Galaxy phone's photo backup system

It was recently revealed that Samsung might end its partnership with Microsoft for the native photo backup system on Galaxy devices. However, it wasn’t clear when this change would be implemented on Samsung phones and tablets. Now, that information has been revealed.

X user Nirmal Sri has discovered information about the OneDrive backup system in the latest internal build of One UI 8.5. This information reveals that the Samsung Gallery app will stop supporting the Microsoft OneDrive backup system on 11 April 2026. This means there are less than six months until OneDrive cloud synchronisation is no longer available on Samsung phones and tablets.

Since Android is a relatively open platform, users have several options to back up their photos, videos, and other files to the cloud. On Galaxy devices, the stock Gallery app has offered photo and video synchronisation via Microsoft’s OneDrive. However, starting April next year, this option will be replaced by Samsung’s own cloud storage service, Samsung Cloud.

Samsung Cloud provides up to 15GB of free cloud storage for all Galaxy smartphone and tablet users. If you require more storage, Samsung will likely offer paid subscription plans similar to Google Drive and OneDrive. Alternatively, you could back up your photos and videos to Google Photos, which is one of the most popular options globally.
